China, global powerhouse and the world’s largest developing country, faces an acute skills shortfall along with the challenges of an ageing population and a shrinking labor force. Labor costs are rising, supply and demand is dangerously skewed, and vocational training is unable to fill the breach fast enough. Macroeconomic transformation and structural change have resulted in increased skills mismatches in the Chinese labor market. When looking for English-speaking jobs, these will mostly be in cities such Beijing and Shanghai – the business and industrial hubs of the country. Many multinational companies have their Asian headquarters in one of these east coast locations – as well as in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin. The majority of expatriate workers in China find jobs with foreign-invested enterprises. Although opportunities do exist with Chinese companies, these usually require some knowledge of Mandarin.
There are 56,050 Indians living in China, according to the MEA. With the growth in bilateral trade between India and China in the last few years, many Indian companies have started setting up Chinese operations to service both their Indian and MNC clientele in China. These companies are into manufacturing (pharmaceuticals, refractories, laminated tubes, auto-components, wind energy etc.), IT and IT-enabled services (including IT education, software solutions, and specific software products), trading, banking and allied activities.
