The launch is especially impactful for the nearly 830,000 Indian expatriates living in Qatar, who make up 27% of the country’s population

By reducing transaction costs and eliminating intermediaries, UPI strengthens the financial link between expats and their families back home

This expansion aligns with India’s broader strategy to globalize its digital payment infrastructure

It also opens doors for Indian fintech companies to explore partnerships and innovations in the Gulf region

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) officially debuted across retail outlets in Qatar this week, marking a major milestone in cross-border digital payments. Previously limited to select duty-free shops at Doha’s Hamad International Airport, UPI is now available at all retail locations, significantly enhancing financial connectivity for the Indian diaspora.

The launch is especially impactful for the nearly 830,000 Indian expatriates living in Qatar, who make up 27% of the country’s population. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal hailed the move as a game-changer, noting that it will make remittances faster, more affordable, and more accessible. By reducing transaction costs and eliminating intermediaries, UPI strengthens the financial link between expats and their families back home.

This expansion aligns with India’s broader strategy to globalize its digital payment infrastructure. UPI has already gained traction in countries like Singapore, UAE, and France, and its rollout in Qatar further cements its role as a trusted, scalable solution for international transactions.

For Indian travelers and residents in Qatar, the convenience of using familiar payment apps for everyday purchases, from groceries to services, adds a layer of comfort and efficiency. It also opens doors for Indian fintech companies to explore partnerships and innovations in the Gulf region.

The move is expected to boost financial inclusion, improve diaspora engagement, and support economic diplomacy between India and Qatar. As digital payments become a cornerstone of global commerce, UPI’s international footprint continues to grow—bringing India’s tech prowess to the world stage.
