Representatives from carmaker Tesla are planning to meet India’s commerce minister this month to explore the possibility of constructing a factory dedicated to producing a US$ 24,000 electric car in the country, according to media reports.

Tesla has expressed its interest in establishing this factory in India, intending to manufacture low-cost electric vehicles for both the local market and potential export.

The proposed US$ 24,000 electric vehicle from Tesla would be substantially cheaper than the company’s current lowest-priced offering, the Model 3 sedan, which sells for just over US$ 32,200 in China.

This upcoming meeting with the commerce minister marks a significant milestone in the discussions between Tesla and the Indian government. The last high-level interaction occurred in June when Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed his intentions to make substantial investments in the country.

In May, Tesla executives had already visited India and engaged in talks with officials regarding the establishment of a manufacturing facility for cars and batteries in the country.

As part of the ongoing discussions with Indian government officials in New Delhi, Tesla representatives are expected to discuss critical aspects such as setting up an electric vehicle supply chain and seeking land allotment for the potential factory.
