Retail businesses grow by 24% in May: Report

Sales in West India grew by 30%, East India by 29%, South India by 22%, and North India by 16%, compared to May 2019

Consumer durables and electronics sales grew by 15%

The food and grocery category clocked 23% growth

India’s retail businesses witnessed a growth in sales of 24% during May this year, according to the Retailers Association of India (RAI).

As per the report, sales in West India grew by 30%, East India by 29%, South India by 22%, and North India by 16%, all compared to the same month last year. 

According to experts, sales increased by 23% last month. 

The report mentioned that since outdoor activities are picking up, certain categories are indicating rapid growth. Sales in quick-service restaurants grew by 41%, footwear went up by 30%, and beauty and wellness by 24%. 

The report further added that consumer durables and electronics sales grew by 15%, clothing and apparel as well as sports goods by 24%, and grocery by 23%, compared to the pre-pandemic period of May 2019.
