Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro was marked by a series of high-level bilateral meetings to strengthen India’s position as a global leader in trade, innovation, and sustainability.
During his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi announced the Joint Strategic Action Plan (2025–29), focusing on 10 key areas, including defence, technology, and energy transition. Both leaders also discussed multilateral initiatives like the Global Biofuels Alliance.
In a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Modi emphasised the importance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. He outlined India’s eagerness to work closely with the UK in technology, green energy, innovation, security, and cultural exchanges. “We also want to add strength to trade and cultural linkages,” Modi remarked while sharing images of their meeting on X.
Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto celebrated 75 years of India-Indonesia ties. They explored expanding their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through enhanced commerce, security, and healthcare cooperation. Similarly, discussions with Portugal’s PM, Luis Montenegro, focused on renewable energy, green hydrogen, and bilateral trade while reaffirming strong defence and cultural ties.
Modi’s discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store centred on innovation, the blue economy, and investments in green hydrogen. The India-EFTA-TEPA agreement provided a foundation for enhancing bilateral ties, with both leaders also addressing global geopolitical challenges.
Earlier in the day, Modi briefly interacted with US President Joe Biden. While specific details were not disclosed, the exchange added a significant layer to India-US relations at the summit.
Modi engaged with leaders from the European Union, South Korea, and Egypt to further India’s diplomatic reach. During his meeting with EU President Ursula von der Leyen, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to global development and explored space, AI, and energy partnerships with French President Emmanuel Macron.
