Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant visit to the United States from September 21st to 24th, 2024, with a packed itinerary that includes high-level summits, business meetings, and bilateral engagements. The visit begins with the much-anticipated QUAD Summit in Delaware, followed by events in New York City, where PM Modi will address the UN Summit for the Future, interact with global CEOs, and participate in diaspora engagements.

The first stop of the visit is the QUAD Summit, a crucial platform for cooperation among India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. This year’s discussions moved to Delaware from India and will focus on Indo-Pacific regional security and diplomacy. In addition to these core geopolitical issues, the summit will delve into technology, infrastructure, and climate change collaborations between the member countries. A diplomatic reception will follow the summit, providing a networking opportunity for key officials and stakeholders before Modi heads to New York for the next leg of his visit.

September 22: New York diaspora event and CEO meetings

PM Modi’s engagements in New York City will begin with a diaspora event at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, where he will address the Indian American community. This event will reaffirm the diaspora’s critical role in strengthening US-India ties. Later in the afternoon, Modi will meet American business leaders to discuss deepening economic cooperation in technology, energy, and manufacturing, followed by a series of bilateral discussions with world leaders.

September 23: UN Summit and global challenges

On September 23, PM Modi will attend the UN Summit for the Future, where he is expected to briefly address global challenges such as sustainable development, digital transformation, and climate change. This summit highlights India’s growing influence in addressing key international issues and underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable growth and global governance. Additional meetings with global leaders are planned throughout the day.

September 24: Final bilateral meetings

The final day of the visit will focus on further bilateral discussions with key global leaders to fortify India’s diplomatic and economic relationships. The talks will cover defence, trade, and technology cooperation before PM Modi departs for India later in the evening.

The significance of the QUAD Summit

The QUAD Summit remains a focal point of the visit, as it takes place against the backdrop of shifting alliances and adversarial relations in the Indo-Pacific. The summit is seen as a strategic counterbalance to China’s growing influence, reinforcing the commitment of the four member countries to maintaining a rules-based international order. India’s increasing role in global security and diplomacy, particularly in promoting regional stability, is also expected to be emphasised.
