Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Singapore on 4-5 September 2024, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday. At the invitation of Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations further.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and hold discussions with other Singaporean leaders. The focus will be on reviewing the progress of the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership and exchanging views on regional and global issues of shared interest. Additionally, PM Modi will engage with Singaporean business leaders to explore potential avenues for cooperation.

The visit was previously mentioned by Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, following a high-level meeting between senior ministers of India and Singapore to enhance strategic ties. The second India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in Singapore recently saw participation from a four-member Indian delegation, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Railways and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Following the roundtable, Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan emphasised the opportunities for collaboration in India’s aviation sector, noting that India’s plans to upgrade its aviation infrastructure present a unique opportunity for Singapore to be at the forefront of cooperation. The discussions also covered strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas such as digital technology, skill development, sustainability, healthcare, connectivity, and manufacturing.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the last meeting, highlighting new initiatives in advanced manufacturing and connectivity as pathways to deeper strategic cooperation. He underscored the potential of these initiatives to strengthen the partnership between India and Singapore further.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, bilateral trade between India and Singapore stood at US$35.61 billion, making Singapore India’s sixth-largest global trade partner. PM Modi’s visit to Singapore will follow his first-ever bilateral visit to Brunei on 3-4 September, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between India and Brunei.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that these visits would further strengthen India’s cooperation with Brunei and Singapore, both on a bilateral level and within regional and multilateral frameworks.
