Modi aims to build on G20 Summit outcomes and address Global South issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to depart for Italy to attend the 50th G7 Summit in the Apulia region. This trip, his first international visit since starting his third term, will also include a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra announced that Modi’s participation at the summit follows an invitation from Prime Minister Meloni. The G7 Summit will be held from June 13 to 15 in the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort, bringing together leaders from the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan.

During the summit, Modi will engage with global leaders on topics significant to India and the Global South, continuing the dialogue from last year’s G20 Summit, which India hosted. This marks India’s 11th involvement in the G7 and Modi’s fifth consecutive appearance.

Kwatra highlighted that the Outreach session on June 14 will focus on Artificial Intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, allowing G7 and Outreach Countries to exchange perspectives. Last year, Modi attended the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, meeting various world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This year’s summit agenda is expected to be dominated by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the Gaza conflict, with discussions including leaders like US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
