Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Ukraine, underscoring India’s push for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine, comes nearly six weeks after Modi’s trip to Russia, where he discussed the same conflict with Russian leadership.

Before departing from Delhi, Modi highlighted his intention to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelenskyy, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on resolving the ongoing conflict. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that Modi’s engagements in Kyiv would encompass many bilateral issues, including political, trade, economic, investments, education, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian assistance. Additionally, the Ukrainian President’s office stressed the importance of this visit, noting that talks between the two leaders would cover bilateral and multilateral cooperation, with several agreements expected to be signed.

India’s stance on the Russian invasion has been neutral. Yet, Modi reaffirmed India’s hope for a peaceful resolution, stating that as a friend and partner, India seeks an early return of peace and stability in the region. His visit to Kyiv is seen as a diplomatic balancing act, especially after his recent visit to Russia, which triggered concerns among Western countries.

The visit has attracted international attention, with the United Nations Secretary-General’s office expressing hope that Modi’s involvement might bring the possibility of ending the war closer to reality. Modi’s visit is part of India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

In discussions with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Modi addressed the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, expressing deep concern and reiterating India’s belief that dialogue and diplomacy are the only paths to restoring peace. He emphasised that no problem can be solved on the battlefield and highlighted the tragic loss of innocent lives as a significant challenge for humanity. Modi assured that India and its friendly nations are prepared to provide all possible support to achieve peace and stability.
