External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on November 12 on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Canada. The meeting focused on trade, supply-chain cooperation, and shared geopolitical challenges.

In a post on the social-media platform X, Jaishankar noted that he appreciated Rubio’s condolences following a blast in Delhi, and highlighted their discussions on bilateral trade and supply chains. They also exchanged views on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, situations in the Middle East/West Asia, and developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

India attended the G7 meeting as an invited partner, joining other key democracies including Australia, Brazil and South Korea under the Canadian presidency. Within this context, India’s presence and Jaishankar’s extensive diplomatic engagements, including meetings with counterparts from Canada, Mexico, France, Brazil, South Africa, the UK and Germany, signal New Delhi’s commitment to working closely with international partners and amplifying the voice of the Global South.

The Jaishankar-Rubio meeting follows recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who described India as one of America’s “most important international relationships” and indicated that Washington is “very close” to finalizing a new trade deal with India.

As the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and renewed great-power tensions remain on the agenda, both countries appear keen to align their approaches and strengthen a partnership that is evolving at a rapid pace.
