India is likely to export mobile phones amounting to US$ 9 billion in FY23, up from US$ 5.8 billion in 2022

Apple exported smartphones amounting to US $1 billion from India in December 2022, making it the first technology brand to achieve this feat, according to media reports. 

Following Apple, the most made-in-India smartphone exports were from Korean technology major Samsung. According to the reports, December was also a record month for the smartphone industry with mobile phone exports amounting to INR 10,000 crore.

As per the reports, government officials mentioned that Apple, through its three contract manufacturers—Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron and Wistron—is producing and exporting iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 14+ models from India. Additionally, small Indian exporters are also said to be exporting iPhones from India. The manufacturers are participants in the government’s smartphone Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

Furthermore, government officials mentioned that India is likely to export mobile phones amounting to US$ 9 billion in FY23, up from US$ 5.8 billion in 2022, as manufacturers are stepping up production and outward shipments. India’s mobile exports are powered by the smartphone PLI scheme. 

Experts said that industry and trade bodies are making suggestions to keep India’s smartphone exports competitive and growing, for the upcoming Union Budget.
