India jumps 10 spots in global rankings average mobile broadband speeds

This was a result of 5G deployment in the country

India ranked at 105th position globally in median mobile speeds in November 2022

Median mobile download speeds in January 2023 stood at 29.85 Mbps

India has jumped 10 spots in the global rankings for average mobile broadband speeds from 79 in December last year to 69 in January 2023, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index. This was a result of 5G deployment in the country.

According to the index, India ranked at 105th position globally in median mobile speeds in November 2022. Median mobile download speeds in January 2023 stood at 29.85 Mbps, compared to 25.29 Mbps in December 2022. 


Regarding median fixed broadband speeds, India’s rank increased by two spots from 81 in December last year to 79 in January, this year. The country’s performance in fixed median download speeds increased to 50.02 Mbps in January 2023 from 49.14 Mbps in December 2022.

Media reports said that Indian mobile operators in India have been rolling out 5G services rapidly, with Reliance Jio already connecting the modern network to 100 cities, while Airtel has also been launching 5G services across the country.
