External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister and member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) political bureau, during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This high-level meeting followed the recent engagement between their leaders at the Kazan Summit, marking the continuation of dialogue between the two nations.
The ministers discussed tangible measures to stabilise ties, such as restarting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, establishing direct flights, and fostering media exchanges. Both sides acknowledged that the disengagement along the border areas has significantly contributed to maintaining peace and stability.
To advance bilateral relations, it was decided to convene a meeting of special representatives and activate the foreign secretary-vice minister mechanism soon. These efforts aim to address outstanding issues and explore avenues for cooperation.
During the discussions, China requested India to resume visa services for its citizens, including those travelling for tourism, business, and other sectors. On global and international matters, Jaishankar highlighted that while differences remain, there are areas of convergence between the two nations.
This meeting reflects the ongoing efforts by both India and China to manage their complex relationship, balancing bilateral interests and broader global challenges.
