India and Australia recently convened the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue to enhance defence cooperation and strengthen the strategic relationship.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Discussions encompassed various areas: defence and security, trade and investment, critical minerals, energy, climate change, science and technology, space, education, and people-to-people linkages. Regional and global issues were also on the agenda.
Emphasising the historical military relations between India and Australia, Wong acknowledged the shared history of Australian soldiers fighting alongside Indian troops in campaigns such as Gallipoli. She underscored the significance of the partnership, stating that Australia considers its bilateral relationship with New Delhi as “consequential” and crucial for the region’s stability, prosperity, and respect for sovereignty.
Expressing the value of the bilateral relationship, Jaishankar highlighted collaborative efforts in economic ties, trade and investment, people-to-people links, and joint climate initiatives. The discussion aimed at furthering cooperation for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
