India and Slovenia deepen sectoral cooperation at New Delhi trade committee meeting

The 10th JCTEC session reviews economic ties, advances collaboration across priority sectors and reinforces shared support for an early India EU trade deal

Both sides reviewed current bilateral engagement and outlined a roadmap for future trade and investment

Bilateral trade in FY 2024 25 reached $848.13 million, with India’s exports at $586.04 million and imports at $262.09 million

India and Slovenia took part in the 10th Session of the Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation in New Delhi, where both sides explored sectoral collaboration across agriculture, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, health, transport, energy, tourism, MSMEs, Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine, along with a range of trade and business matters.

The meeting was co-chaired by Saket Kumar, Joint Secretary in India’s Department of Commerce, and Peter Japelj, Director General for Economic, Cultural and Scientific Diplomacy at Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

They reviewed the current state of bilateral economic engagement to strengthen cooperation in priority sectors and outline a forward-looking roadmap for trade and investment between the two countries. During the visit, Japelj also met Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal.

In FY 2024 25, bilateral trade between India and Slovenia stood at $848.13 million. India exported goods worth $586.04 million and imported goods worth $262.09 million.

The two countries already have several agreements in place, including the Joint Committee on Bilateral Trade and Cooperation, an agreement on Scientific and Technology Cooperation, a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and an Agreement on Mutual Promotion and Protection of Investments.

Both sides said they were optimistic about an early conclusion of a balanced, mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement. An EU delegation is expected to arrive in India next month to continue negotiations.

India has held discussions with multiple EU member states in recent months, including Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway and Romania. India and the EU aim to conclude the FTA negotiations this calendar year.
