Historical relations between the two countries faced challenges post-independence but were renewed after the liberation of Goa in 1961

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel discussed enhancing trade, investment, and economic collaboration between India and Portugal. Goyal’s office described the meeting as productive and underscored both sides’ commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

Rangel arrived in Delhi on December 12 on his first official visit to India. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed optimism about the visit, which he said would reinforce the multifaceted relationship between the two nations as they approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

The visit includes a key meeting on December 13 between Rangel and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. Following his engagements in the capital, Rangel will travel to Goa on December 14 to participate in programmes to strengthen cultural and economic bonds before departing on December 15.

This visit signifies a step forward in strengthening contemporary relations, focusing on economic growth and mutual collaboration in the years ahead.
