India Maldives commit to stronger bilateral ties

The High Commissioner and President discussed peace and stability in the Indian Ocean

India replaced nearly 90 military personnel in the Maldives with civilians, operating a Dornier aircraft and two helicopters

India and the Maldives reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to fostering close relations and enhancing bilateral cooperation, agreeing to work together to maintain peace and stability in the Indian Ocean.

According to a press release, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, met with President Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office. They discussed ways to further strengthen ties and reviewed various projects India has undertaken in the Maldives.

Mahawar expressed gratitude to President Muizzu for attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, noting it was Muizzu’s first visit to India since becoming president in November last year. The High Commissioner highlighted the productive avenues of ongoing cooperation between the two nations, such as joint military exercises and cultural exchange programs, and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ progress and development.

President Muizzu conveyed his appreciation for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended by the Indian government during his visit. He thanked India for its commitment to assisting the Maldives in its development and addressing the needs of its people.

The two leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to fostering continued close relations and enhancing bilateral cooperation. They also agreed to continue working together towards maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean.

The Indian High Commission in the Maldives, reacting to the press release, emphasised the importance of enhancing the special relationship between the two countries in a post on X.

Relations between India and the Maldives had been strained since November last year when Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, took office as Maldivian president.
