The Union Cabinet approved the extension of the Digital India initiative until 2025-26, spanning five additional years with an allocation of INR 14,903 crore, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Electronics and Information Technology.

Vaishnaw mentioned that the government focuses on refining and augmenting existing schemes, enhancing their scale and relevance to meet contemporary demands effectively.

Within the scope of the expanded scheme, the government is set to facilitate the re-skilling and upskilling of 625,000 information technology professionals through the FutureSkills Prime Program. Additionally, approximately 265,000 individuals will receive training in information security via the information security and education awareness phase program.

Furthermore, the Digital India funds will broaden the ambit of the Bhashini program, an artificial intelligence-powered multilingual translation tool. This expansion will encompass all 22 languages enumerated in Schedule 8 of the Constitution, in contrast to the current availability of only 10 Indian languages.

In conjunction with the 18 supercomputers that have already been deployed as part of the National Supercomputer Mission, the government has plans to introduce an additional nine supercomputers, as stated by Vaishnaw. He added that the administration is also intent on fostering the growth of 1,200 startups located in tier-2 and tier-3 towns.

Originally launched on July 1, 2015, the Digital India scheme operates as an overarching program encompassing initiatives such as universal Aadhaar coverage, nationwide rural broadband connectivity, the establishment of shared service centres, the BHIM payment platform, Aadhaar-enabled payment systems, and the MyGov platform.
