India is the fourth country to land on the moon

India is set to launch its first mission to the International Space Station in collaboration with the United States next year
On 23rd August, 2023, India achieved a historic milestone by successfully landing the spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s South Pole – a territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water. This journey stands as a technological triumph for the nation.
Following an unsuccessful Moon landing attempt in 2019, India now becomes the fourth country to accomplish this feat, joining the ranks of the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.
The lander containing a rover safely touched down on the lunar surface at approximately 6:04 PM IST (Indian Standard Time). This achievement underscores India’s growing reputation as a technology and space leader, solidifying its position among global frontrunners.
The mission commenced over a month ago at an approximate expense of $75 million and is projected to continue for an additional two weeks. Over the next few hours, the rover will extend from the lander through a flap and proceed to perform experiments. These experiments will encompass an examination of the mineral composition present on the lunar surface.
India’s involvement in space activities dates back to the 1960s, during which it has launched satellites for both its own purposes and other nations. In 2014, India successfully placed a satellite into Mars’ orbit. Looking ahead, India has plans for its inaugural mission to the International Space Station, scheduled for the following year in collaboration with the United States.
