Recently, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with prominent Russian strategic community representatives, delving into discussions on connectivity, multilateralism, big power competition, and regional conflicts. The significance of rebalancing and the emergence of multipolarity was underscored during the meeting.

Jaishankar shared the interaction details on X (ex-twitter), expressing the importance of a forward-looking dialogue with key figures from the Russian strategic community. The discussion encompassed topics such as the rebalancing of global dynamics and the emergence of multipolarity. Views were exchanged on the anticipated development of India-Russia ties within this evolving framework, focusing on connectivity, multilateralism, big power competition, and regional conflicts. Jaishankar emphasised that the positive trajectory of India-Russia ties would be maintained through geopolitical considerations and strategic convergence.

As part of his 4-day visit to Russia, Jaishankar is scheduled to meet with Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov to discuss economic engagement. Additionally, meetings with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, are planned. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that discussions would cover bilateral, multilateral, and international issues.

The MEA emphasised the enduring nature of the India-Russia partnership, characterising it as a Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Jaishankar, in a previous statement in September, described the ties between India and Russia as exceptional and steady, contrasting them with Moscow’s relationships with other nations, which have experienced greater volatility.

Regarding trade, the Embassy of India in Russia reported that bilateral trade between India and Russia from April 2020-March 2021 amounted to US$ 8.1 billion. According to Russian figures, the bilateral trade stood at US$ 9.31 billion, with Indian exports at US$ 3.48 billion and imports at US$ 5.83 billion.
