In today’s digital era, harnessing the power of digitization for Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) excellence presents many advantages for organizations. By embracing digital technologies, companies can revolutionize their EHS management practices, elevate their data collection and analysis capabilities, and ultimately foster safer and more sustainable workplaces.

The areas where changes should be focused are the exposure to hazards and achieving the policy and goals. Digital tools or software, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning, can help us in this regard. IoT can help improve safety and health outcomes in the workplace by providing real-time information on exposure to hazards. Hence, digitization enables the introduction of mechanisms to monitor the outcomes and take corrective action.

Though digitization has innovation potential and encourages development in the workplace, it also poses new challenges. Digitization is undoubtedly a powerful tool. It not only monitors everyone’s performance but also improves the quality of the performance. It’s also easier to access from anywhere, so everyone can contribute to the process.

The aim of this change and transformation is to perform tasks faster, more effectively, and cost-effectively to help in a quick decision-making process. It is necessary to reiterate that the workplace has drastically changed over recent years, and we must learn how to embrace technology to stay safe and competitive.

Against this backdrop, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Eastern Region, is organizing the 18th edition of the Safety Symposium & Exposition, the two-day annual flagship initiative, on 22-23 August 2024 at ITC Sonar, Kolkata. The initiative’s central theme is “Leveraging Digitization for EHS Excellence.”

The symposium aims to deliberate upon and understand how digitization brings opportunities and new challenges in the field of EHS. It will also discuss how to implement digitization within an ethical framework, which requires employee education and skilling, employee involvement, and regulation that enhances safety in the digital age.
