India continues to dominate as the primary source of immigration to Canada, with over 118,000 Indians obtaining “permanent resident” (PR) status in 2022, constituting 27% of the total PRs granted.

Additionally, Canada ranks among the top 10 source countries for remittances from abroad. However, regarding trade, Canada’s share in India’s exports remains at approximately 1%. It is even lower in imports, highlighting the need for a closer examination of their bilateral economic interactions amidst deteriorating diplomatic relations.

Indian students have significantly impacted the Canadian economy, contributing US$ 4.9 billion in 2021, according to the Canadian Bureau for International Education. They also form Canada’s largest international student group, representing 20% of all international students in the same year.

With over 319,000 Indian students enrolled in Canadian institutions, they constitute the largest international student cohort in the country, as reported by the Global Trade Research Initiative.
