Around 270 million unorganized sector workers join the e-Shram portal

The e-Shram portal that was launched on 26th August has received 270 million registrations till date. In order to deliver future security benefits to the Central and state workers, an Aadhar-seeded centralized database will be put in place.

As per a senior Ministry Official, the process of registration will continue in perpetuity even after 380 million workers join e-Shram.

Anyone above the age of 16 years is eligible to register themselves on the portal.

Workers aged between 16-59 years excluding the members of existing social sector schemes run by ESIC, EPFO, or NPS are eligible to register.

Workers aged between 18-59 years will be eligible for an accidental insurance cover of INR 2 lakh.

The e-Shram portal that was launched on 26th August has received 270 million registrations from the unorganized sector. The labour ministry plans to on-board 380 million workers by March 2023. In order to deliver future security benefits to the workers of the states and the Centre, an Aadhar-seeded centralized database will be put in place. 

As per a senior Ministry Official, the process of registration will continue in perpetuity even after 380 million workers join the portal. Anyone above the age of 16 years is eligible to register themselves on the portal. 

Workers aged between 16-59 years excluding the members of existing social sector schemes run by ESIC, EPFO, or NPS are eligible to register themselves on the portal. After the registration process, workers aged between 18-59 years are eligible to receive an accidental insurance cover of INR 2 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for the first year at no additional cost. Starting from the second year, the workers receiving the Insurance cover have to pay an annual premium of INR 12 in order to receive the lifetime benefits of the insurance scheme. 

There are more than 400 occupations that have been incorporated and registered under this portal. Once ready, the portal will also provide interoperability and connection of databases of other ministries as well.
