On May 11, India and Peru marked 55 years of diplomatic relations with the state visit of Indian Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. The occasion helped deepen ties with Peru and in turn with South America whose developing economies offer lucrative trade as well as developmental opportunities. Meetings during VP Naidu’s visit saw the top leadership of Peru acknowledging that their country has a lot to gain from the success story of India and hence resolved with India to significantly enhance trade relations. During his visit, VP Naidu met with President, Prime Minister and senior Ministers of Peru in Lima on a range of issues indicating specific areas for enhanced cooperation. The Indian delegation made use of the visit to also promote the country’s strength in supply of quality and cost-effective generic medicines, information technology, defence equipment, science and technology, space applications, among others.
During the delegation level talks, the Peruvian Prime Minister, Cesar Villanueva Bardales, leading a delegation of four ministers and senior official, noted that India is acknowledged as a leader in pharma sector and Peru could take benefit of the same. Health Minister of Peru, Silvia Pessah Eljay, requested the Indian Government to do the needful to enable Indian Pharma companies set up generic medicines production facilities in Peru. the Peruvian side agreed to consider VP Naidu’s suggestion for hassle free registration of Indian pharma companies for supply of medicines. Meanwhile, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rogers Valencia Espinoza, while speaking of the potential of bilateral trade between the two countries said that Peru was keen about concluding a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with India. A third round of discussion on the topic is scheduled to be held in Delhi in August this year.
Referring to the success of the Information Technology Centre in Peru set up by India, the Peruvian side expressed the need to set up more such centres in the country. Earlier, during his talks with, Martin Vizcarra, the President of Peru, VP Shri Naidu said that 55 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries was an important landmark and it was time to assess the achievements so far to chart out a course of action to realize the full potential. Peruvian President said his country was closely watching India’s progress in different sectors including its transition from an agrarian economy to being an IT leader with strong capacities in science and technology, space sector, among others. Amid the delegation level talks, India and Peru signed a deal on cooperation in renewable Energy.
