The Labour Bureau has been conducting the Quarterly Employment Survey since April 2016 with the objective of measuring relative change in employment over successive quarters in non-farm industrial economy.
Establishments having 10 or more workers were covered in the survey; The eight sectors surveyed constitute around 81 per cent of the total employment of units with 10 or more workers under organised sector.
Out of the total change in employment, female workers represented a growth of 74,000, while male workers accounted for an increase of 62,000, thus representing an improved gender balance in Indian workplace.
Going ahead, the Government has said that it would count jobs from the non-farm informal sector, including those from establishments with less than 10 workers, into job report for better representation of the market.
Around 136,000 jobs were added across India during the second quarter of financial year 2017-18 spanning July-September, according to the seventh Quarterly Employment Survey report brought out by the Indian Government’s Labour Bureau on March 12th. The survey covered eight distinct sectors – Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transport, Education, Health, Hospitality and IT/BPO. The report reaffirms confidence in the Indian economy that has been recovering from the short-term aftereffects of certain disruptive policy enforcements over the last two years. The job addition also marks a year-on-year rise in 2.5 per cent. The Manufacturing sector added more than 89,000 jobs, the Education sector added over 21,000 jobs, the Transport sector added more than 20,000 jobs, the Trade sector added over 14,000 jobs, the Health sector added over 11,000 jobs, the Hospitality sector added more than 2,000 jobs and the IT/BPO sector added over 1,000 jobs. Meanwhile, the Construction sector lost 22,000 jobs during the quarter, owing primarily to project completions Out of the total change in employment, female workers represented a growth of 74,000, while male workers accounted for an increase of 62,000, thus representing an improved gender balance.
The count of regular workers marked a rise of 65,000, followed by an increase of 44,000 and 23,000 in contract and casual workers, respectively. The Quarterly Employment Survey is covering employment trends in establishments having an employment size of about 24 million workers only, against the more than 470 million workers in the total Indian workforce. Going ahead, the Government has said that it would count jobs from non-farm informal sector, including those from establishments with less than 10 workers, into job report. Data from the new model of survey is expected to be released by mid-2019 the latest. The new system will provide a clearer representation of the employment market in the country, and as unorganised sector represents a big chunk of the economy, the new system will help in stronger job creation in future.
