India and Belgium have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding cooperation in the field of Information Communication Technology and Electronics (ICT&E), according to an official announcement on January 3rd 2018. The MoU was signed during the state visit of King Philippe of Belgium to India on November 7th 2017. The agreement is backed by close ties between India and Belgium that has led to Belgium becoming India’s second largest trade partner in the European Union.

The agreement, aimed at expanding partnership between India and Belgium, includes sharing of the best practices in the area of ICT&E policies. The countries will also focus on digital technology and research with an emphasis on developing ICT&E manufacturing and service capacity. This will help improve e-Governance and e-Public Service delivery in both the countries. Furthermore, India and Belgium aim to expand mutual participation in research and development activities and exchange of experts and cyber security in order to resolve issues of data adequacy, market access, trade and services.

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is partnering with number of countries for fostering bilateral and multilateral ICT cooperation. Meanwhile, Belgium has developed expertise in the Communication Technology sector, especially in the field of e-Governance and electronic ID card and Tax on web. Such technologies and services will help India better employ its enabling initiatives such as Make in India, while simplifying regulations in order to facilitate investments in the technology sector.

This is of critical importance to the Indian Government which had launched a campaign in 2015, named Digital India, aimed at facilitating an increasing count of services electronically. Resultantly, the Indian Government has sought to upgrade and expand internet connectivity across the country. Digital holds solutions to a wide range of concerns brought up by India’s fast growing, diverse and vast marketplace. Improved ICT&E infrastructure and services will improve efficiency and in return empower India’s economy, a considerable part of which is supported by the information technology industry.
