India’s startup ecosystem has created over 1.6 million jobs nationwide, as recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), which has acknowledged 1.57 lakh startups as of December 25. More than 73,000 of these startups include at least one woman director, reflecting growing gender diversity in entrepreneurship.
The growth of startups has been fuelled by widespread internet access and a dynamic, youthful workforce. Fintech, edtech, health tech, and e-commerce are significantly expanding and are driven by innovation and supportive policy measures.
India’s position as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem results from demographic and economic advantages and favourable government initiatives. The country boasts over 100 unicorns—startups valued at over $1 billion—signifying its robust entrepreneurial landscape.
Companies like Zomato, Ola, and Nykaa are thriving domestically and have expanded operations globally, demonstrating India’s ability to scale and compete internationally. The success of Indian-origin startups in Silicon Valley further underscores the nation’s global influence in shaping innovation.
