External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on Friday, focusing on strengthening cooperation between the two nations. During their meeting, Jaishankar conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, reiterating India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development and fostering regional stability.
Jaishankar appreciated President Dissanayake’s guidance on advancing bilateral relations, underscoring the importance of the partnership between the two neighbours. The meeting covered a range of issues, including ways to deepen ongoing cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with Sri Lanka’s new Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath. The discussions addressed matters of mutual interest, including India’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s economic rebuilding efforts. Jaishankar highlighted India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR as central frameworks for advancing cooperation, particularly in the maritime domain.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka shared images from the meeting, with Herath welcoming Jaishankar to Colombo. Herath, who took office on 24 September, also holds additional portfolios, including Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, National Integration, Social Security, and Mass Media.
The meeting comes just weeks after Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, was declared President by the Sri Lankan Election Commission. His victory prompted congratulations from Indian Prime Minister Modi, who reiterated India’s dedication to maintaining close ties with Sri Lanka through the Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR, which aims to promote regional maritime security and cooperation.
