India's strategic importance in US foreign policy has grown, highlighted by recent meetings between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday. They will discuss various global and bilateral issues, including the ongoing crises in Ukraine and the Middle East. Jaishankar’s visit to Washington on Sunday marks his first trip to the US capital since the third Modi government took office. He will also hold discussions with other Cabinet-rank officials in the Biden administration.

In addition to his governmental meetings, Jaishankar will engage with the think tank community, including a conversation hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This discussion, featuring Carnegie’s president Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, will focus on the future of US-India relations and India’s growing strategic importance in global geopolitics and US foreign policy.

Carnegie highlighted India’s rising influence, noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2023 State Visit and his recent bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden at the Delaware residence on September 21. The leaders were later joined by counterparts from Australia and Japan for the QUAD Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.

Amidst rapidly shifting global developments, India’s bilateral ties with the US have become more expansive, particularly in areas like the Indo-Pacific, defence innovation, and critical technologies. The Carnegie event will explore how India envisions its role in global leadership and how the US and India can work together on issues like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, democracy, and security.

As India’s significance continues to rise, this visit signals an ongoing commitment to bolstering US-India cooperation, especially in the face of shared global challenges.
