EAM Jaishankar’s diplomatic tour concludes with talks in Malaysia

EAM engaged in "productive and frank" dialogue with Malaysian counterpart, Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, discussing bilateral relations and regional issues

During his visit to Kuala Lumpur, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a “productive and frank” dialogue with his Malaysian counterpart, Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, covering various aspects of the bilateral relationship between India and Malaysia, as well as regional and international issues. This visit concludes Jaishankar’s tour, including stops in Singapore and the Philippines.

According to an official statement from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jaishankar met with Foreign Minister Hasan for a comprehensive discussion, exchanging views on the multifaceted dimensions of Malaysia-India bilateral relations and regional and international matters of mutual interest. The ministers also discussed plans for high-level visits and the scheduling of the 7th Joint Commission Meeting between Malaysia and India at a convenient time for both parties. This meeting marked the first encounter between Jaishankar and Hasan since Hasan assumed office in December 2023.

Later in the day, Jaishankar is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo, according to the foreign ministry. Jaishankar’s visit aims to enhance cooperation between India and Malaysia while deepening the understanding of shared challenges and opportunities, as highlighted in the statement.

The statement also emphasised Malaysia and India’s longstanding and substantial relationship, characterised by robust economic partnerships and close interpersonal connections. In 2023, India ranked Malaysia’s 12th largest global trading partner, with total trade valued at US$ 16.53 billion.
