Coal production in the country increased by 11% in 2023

The Ministry of Coal announced that in December 2023, the production of Coal India Limited (CIL) witnessed a notable increase, reaching 71.86 MT, marking an 8.27% growth compared to the 66.37 MT recorded in December 2022. As of the conclusion of the nine months in FY 2024, CIL achieved a noteworthy coal production of 532 MT, showcasing an impressive year-on-year growth of 11%. 

This positive momentum extended throughout the fiscal year 2023-24, resulting in a cumulative coal production of 684.31 MT. This marked an impressive growth of 12.47% compared to the corresponding FY 2022-23 period.

The Ministry of Coal attributes this substantial growth to the dedicated efforts of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The ministry underscored the commitment of the coal supply chain to ensuring seamless distribution across the nation, reaffirming its dedication to maintaining consistent coal production and dispatch. This commitment is crucial for fostering a reliable and resilient energy sector.

The collaborative endeavours of coal PSUs, particularly CIL, contribute to the seamless distribution of coal and align with the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a dependable energy sector. Furthermore, CIL’s subsidiaries have exhibited positive growth trends, sustaining a double-digit growth trajectory since July 2023.

The statement also emphasises a significant volume increase of 53 MT from April to December in FY 2023. This consistent double-digit growth pattern, maintained since July 2023, further underscores the resilience and effectiveness of CIL’s operations in the evolving coal production landscape.
