India’s urban unemployment rates for individuals aged 15 and above dropped to 6.6%, down in the April-June period of 2023 from 7.6% in the same period last year, according to data from The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
The data also highlights changes in female and male unemployment rates. Among females aged 15 and above in urban areas, the unemployment rate decreased to 9.1% in April-June 2023, compared to 9.5% in the same quarter the previous year. It was 9.2% in January-March 2023, 9.6% in October-December 2022, and 9.4% in July-September 2022. Among males, the urban unemployment rate dipped to 5.9% in April-June 2023, down from 7.1% in the same quarter a year ago. It was 6% in January-March 2023, 6.5% in October-December 2022, and 6.6% in July-September 2022.
The elevated unemployment rate observed in April-June 2022 was primarily attributed to the significant impact of COVID-related restrictions in the country. The urban unemployment rate was recorded at 7.6%, according to the 19th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).
In January-March 2023, the unemployment rate stood at 6.8%. This was consistent with the 7.2% unemployment rate observed in July-September 2022 and October-December 2022.
Furthermore, the labour force participation rate in Current Weekly Status (CWS) for individuals aged 15 and above in urban areas increased to 48.8% in April-June 2023, up from 47.5% in the same period one year earlier. It was 48.5% in January-March 2023, 48.2% in October-December 2022, and 47.9% in July-September 2022. The labour force includes both employed and unemployed individuals who offer or seek labour for economic activities in producing goods and services.
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in CWS for individuals aged 15 and above in urban areas reached 45.5% in April-June 2023, up from 43.9% in the same period the previous year. It was 45.2% in January-March 2023, 44.7% in October-December 2022, and 44.5% in July-September 2022.
