In the 2023 Global Innovation Index rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, India has maintained its 40th position among 132 economies. India’s journey on the Global Innovation Index (GII) has been marked by remarkable progress, catapulting from the 81st rank in 2015 to its current standing in 2023.

A statement from government think tank NITI Aayog mentioned that this consistent ascent in the GII ranking can be attributed to India’s abundant knowledge capital, a thriving startup ecosystem, and the efforts of public and private research organisations, as highlighted in the statement.

NITI Aayog acknowledged the essential contributions of all government departments in nurturing the National Innovation Ecosystem, with particular recognition of the Atal Innovation Mission’s substantial role in expanding this ecosystem.

The statement also emphasised innovation’s pivotal role in combatting the pandemic’s unprecedented challenges and its significance in bolstering the nation’s resilience, echoing the Prime Minister’s vision of “Atma Nirbhar Bharat.”

The Global Innovation Index serves as a valuable tool for governments worldwide, enabling them to assess the impact of innovation on their social and economic landscapes. Over time, the GII has become a vital government policy instrument, facilitating reflection on current affairs and inspiring innovation-driven progress.
