Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors such as green hydrogen, high technology, semiconductors, and digital public infrastructure.
These talks took place during the G7 summit in Hiroshima. The leaders also explored ways to collaborate in addressing global challenges under India’s G20 presidency and Japan’s leadership of the G7 advanced economies.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both prime ministers exchanged perspectives on a broad range of topics, including development finance, food security, climate change, and energy. The MEA stated that the leaders emphasized the need to synchronize efforts between their respective G-20 and G-7 presidencies, with Prime Minister Modi stressing the importance of representing the concerns and priorities of the Global South. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to discuss and collaborate on various international matters leading up to both the G7 and G20 summits.
The MEA statement further highlighted that Modi and Kishida also discussed strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, counterterrorism strategies, and United Nations reforms. Additionally, contemporary regional developments were addressed, and efforts to deepen collaboration in areas such as education, skill development, tourism, Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), green hydrogen, high technology, semiconductors, and digital public infrastructure were emphasized.
According to a Japanese statement, Modi and Kishida expressed satisfaction with the growing defence exchanges since the second Japan-India ‘2+2’ defence and foreign ministerial dialogue held in September 2022.
The statement also mentioned that Modi and Kishida welcomed the steady progress made toward the 5-trillion-yen target of public and private investment and financing from Japan to India within the next five years, as established in March of the previous year. Additionally, it highlighted the signing of a 300-billion-yen loan for the high-speed rail project and confirmed the continuation of cooperation in promoting this initiative. The two leaders also pledged to continue their collaboration on the development of India’s Northeastern region through the Japan-India Act East Forum.
