Tim Cook promised that Apple will double the employee headcount to 2 lakh workers over the next few years
After his meeting with the PM, Cook met with communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss Apple's expansion plans
Through its manufacturing partners alone, Apple plans to create around 1 lakh jobs
The government assured Cook of support in skilling under the Gati Shakti University model as per the company's requirements
Following his business engagements in Mumbai, Apple CEO Tim Cook arrived in Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi and his ministerial colleagues, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
In the meeting, Cook highlighted Apple’s efforts to expand its operations and manufacturing set-up with a view to driving job creation in India. He promised to double the headcount to 2 lakh workers over the next few years, mostly through contract manufacturers. Cook also emphasized that Apple’s engagements in India were aligned with the country’s larger societal goals.
After his meeting with the PM, Cook met with communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss Apple’s expansion plans, business operations, and willingness to create more manufacturing jobs through its vendors. Vaishnaw tweeted that they discussed deepening Apple’s engagement in India across manufacturing, electronics exports, app economy, skilling, sustainability, and job creation, particularly for women.
Cook highlighted Apple’s goal to create around 1 lakh jobs through its manufacturing partners in India over a shorter period this time around. Further, he acknowledged the government’s role in supporting electronics manufacturing in the country, including through the production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes. Cook also requested that policy stability be maintained while proactive measures towards the component ecosystem be continued.
However, the government assured Cook of support in skilling under the Gati Shakti University model as per the company’s requirements. Additionally, Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that Cook also discussed the need to grow exports from India, which were estimated to be over $5.5 billion in 2022-23.
Earlier this week, Cook inaugurated Apple’s first self-owned store in Mumbai and he’s scheduled to inaugurate a second store in Delhi on Thursday before leaving the country.
