The Indian government is developing a pandemic preparedness program which will enable institutions to create any type of vaccine within 100 days. The Ind-Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) program has been initiated by the Department of Biotechnology to develop a technology or method that allows for vaccine readiness within 100 days in India. Additionally, other organizations such as the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Directorate General of Health Services, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research are also setting up laboratories in various regions to allow for quick sample testing during epidemics without the need for approval.
Experts said that India aims to amplify any call from CEPI internationally to support vaccine development against any circulating virus.
India has a proven track record in manufacturing generics and vaccines on a large scale, but building capacity for such a pandemic preparedness program requires setting up platforms for testing and validation of samples. This is in line with the government’s “One Nation One Health” mission and how the country can prepare itself for the future.
