Public-private partnerships can create robust digital solutions which will solve population-scale problems in the telecom sector

India will roll out its own 4G and 5G telecom technology stack in 2020 across the country and offer it globally in 2024, according to Electronics & Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who was addressing B20 India Inception Meeting.

The India Stack is a collection of open APIs and public digital resources that, when used together, can create powerful digital solutions to address large-scale problems.

According to the minister, the funding for this project will be offered by the government and everything else will be facilitated by the private sector. This year, the government plans to roll out about 50,000 to 70,000 towers and sites and then start offering the technology globally in 2024. Additionally, the Minister also said that the technology has been tested to handle 10 million calls simultaneously.

As per media reports, the Minister further said that currently, five countries have seamless network connectivity across different telecom networks, However, the public-private partnership will allow India to join that league.

The Minister also stated that the need to strengthen the digital economy is crucial and while protecting data is important, it can also act as a barrier to innovation. Therefore, finding a balance between protecting individual rights and promoting innovation is challenging, but the draft Digital Data Protection Bill attempts to achieve this balance and has received positive feedback at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
