Technology giant Apple Inc’s biggest iPhone manufacturing unit in India will be set up in Hosur, Karnataka and will employ about 60,000 people, according to Telecom and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
About 6,000 tribal women residing near Ranchi and Hazaribagh have been skilled to make iPhones. According to the minister, Tata Electronics has been outsourced by Apple to manufacture iPhones, as the former has a facility in Hosur. In India, Apple gets its iPhone manufactured by Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron.
Last month, the company started manufacturing its flagship smartphone iPhone 14 in India. For the last five years, Apple has been manufacturing older iPhone models in India.
According to analysts, Apple will move 5% of its global production for the iPhone 14 to India by the end of this year.
With more smartphone companies setting up their manufacturing facilities in India, the country can soon become a prominent smartphone manufacturing hub of the world.
