Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a 5G testbed to support India’s telecom industry and startups. The testbed has been developed as a multi-institute collaborative project by eight institutes, led by IIT Madras.
The project has been developed at a cost of over INR 220 Crore, and is poised to develop a supportive ecosystem for the country’s telecom industry and startups by helping them validate their products, prototypes, and solutions in the fifth generation, as well as next-generation technologies. The testbed facility will be available at 5 different locations according to reports.
According to a report by IHS Markit, the introduction of 5G in India will bring a surge in demand for semiconductors, and facilitate an annual investment of US $235 billion in order to create a robust 5G infrastructure in the country. It will further lead to the advancement of Cloud Data Centres, Internet of Things (IoT), and automobile technologies.
PM Modi will announce the project during a ceremony commemorating TRAI’s silver jubilee.
TRAI was established in 1997 to regulate the country’s telecom services.
