April records highest GST collections of INR 1.68 lakh crores

The government settled INR 33,423 crores toward goods and services tax (GST) and INR 26,962 crores toward state GST from the integrated GST.

This collection in April is an increase of 20% over the amount collected in March.

The government stated that this increase in returns is due to severe action taken against tax-payers who were identified using data analytics and artificial intelligence.

For the first quarter of the fiscal year, the government projects the average monthly collection to be higher than INR 1.40 lakh crore.

Cess collections amounted to INR 10,649 crores, including INR 857 crores on imports.

GST collections hit 1.68 INR lakh crore in April, indicating an all-time high growth due to an improved tax compliance, despite multiple challenges. This collection in April is an increase of 20% or INR 25,000 crores, over the INR 1.42 lakh crore that was collected in March this year. In April, approximately 10.6 million GST returns were filed as compared to 9.2 million GST returns in the previous year. 

The government stated that this increase in returns is due to severe action taken against tax-payers who were identified using data analytics and artificial intelligence. 

For the first quarter of the fiscal year, the government projects the average monthly collection to be higher than INR 1.40 lakh crore. 

Of the total amount collected, central GST accounted for INR 33,159 crores, while the state GST was at INR 41,793 crores, and integrated GST was at INR 81,939 crores. Around INR 36,705 crores was collected on the import of goods. Cess collections amounted to INR 10,649 crores, including INR 857 crores on imports. The government has settled INR 33,423 crores toward central GST and INR 26,962 crores toward state GST from the integrated GST.
