India and EU to establish Trade & Technology council

Ursula Von Der Leyen stated that Russia’s attack on Ukraine will be a major deciding factor for Europe’s future and will also affect the Indo-pacific region along with impacting the security systems across the world.

To counter major geopolitical changes, the Indian Government has decided to collaborate with the European Union (EU) and establish a Trade and a Technology council that will address the challenges of implementing trusted technology and security.

The agreement was signed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen, who is on a two-day visit to India.

The next meeting regarding the trade agreement is expected to take place in June 2022, after the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 12th ministerial meeting.

Earlier this month, the Commerce Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam led a team of officials to Brussels to develop a framework for a trade agreement.

Setting up of such a council will be the first for India and second for the EU, following the first one with the US. 

The agreement was signed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen, who is on a two-day visit to India. The on-going trade talks with India and EU’s free trade agreement along with an investment agreement was also discussed in the meeting.
