For the first time ever, EV sales have hit the 50,000 mark in a month.
During December, there was an increase of 444% in EV sales as compared to last year.
2,522 units of EV cars were sold in December, i.e. 64% higher than the previous month.
Tata Motors currently stands as the major driver for the EV sales in the country
The total number of EV sales in India during the month of December has increased twofold as compared to 2020. In 2021, EV sales in India also hit the three-lakh mark recording its highest annual sales ever. During the month of December, a total of 50,889 units were sold i.e. 240% jump as compared to 2020. It is also the very first time that EVs have hit the 50,000 mark in a month, as per the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
During 2021, the total number of registered vehicles stood at 311,339 units while during 2020, the number of registered vehicles was 119,654 units. With this, the sale of EV vehicles continues to grow in the country with December marking an increase of 444% increase in EV vehicles on a year-on-year basis.
Industry analysts also say that the demand for electric vehicles should stay organic before the subsidy scheme runs out, for currently, the Central and the State government are pushing EV vehicles to achieve price parity with ICE vehicles.
As far as the sales of electric cars are concerned, a total of 2,522 units were sold during December i.e 64% higher than the previous month and 410% higher than the previous year. Tata Motors is the major driver of sales for electric four-wheeled vehicles, accounting for 93% of registrations in the month of December, 2021.
Registered three-wheelers (passenger and cargo) stood at 23,373 units during December which records an increase of 29.8%. EV two-wheeled vehicles and passenger-type electric three-wheeled vehicles marked a total of 90.3% registrations in December, 2021. Electric cars accounted for 5% while cargo electric three-wheeled vehicles held 4.3% of share.
