Telecom AGR grows by 5.66% in April-June quarter

Increase in sector’s adjusted gross revenue attributed to increase in revenue of leading operators

Access services of BSNL increased by 6.82% in the quarter; Reliance Jio’s increased by 8.65%.

Bharti Airtel’s access services grew by 4.96% in the April-June quarter from US$ 1.74 billion (Rs 13,049.44 crore) in January-March.

Licence fee receipts increased to US$ 548 million (Rs 4,103 crore), marking a 3.13% growth during the quarter.

Growth of 5G technology is expected to contribute $450 billion to the economy between 2023-2040.

The adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of the Indian telecom sector grew to US$ 6.859 billion ( Rs 51,335 crore) in the April-June 2021 period from US$ 6.482 billion (Rs 48,587 crore) in the January-March quarter, marking a 5.66% growth. The revenues of mobile service operators such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are seen to have increased during the period, contributing towards this development. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI),  BSNL witnessed a 6.82% increase  in its accesses services, Reliance Jio an 8.65% increase and Bharti Airtel a 4.96% increase in the April-June quarter as against the January-March figures of Rs US$ 265 million (1,987.31 crore) , US$ 2,194 billion (Rs 16,422.83 crore) and US$ 1.74 billion (Rs 13,049.44 crore) respectively. The period also witnessed the increase of licence fee receipts to US$ 548 million (Rs 4,103 crore), marking a 3.13% increase from the previous quarter. 

India’s telecom network comprises more than 1,187.9 million lines, making it the second largest network of telephone connections. With the successful expansion of 3G and 4G coverage, the Government of India is prioritizing the roll-out of 5G technology.  The technology is expected to contribute $450 billion to the economy between 2023-2040, making the case for greater proliferation of telecom connectivity.
