The Jal Jeevan Mission is being implemented in partnership with various states in India to enable every rural household to have a functional household tap connection by 2024

In the year since Jal Jeevan Mission was announced, 20 million households have been provided tap water connection, with Goa becoming the first 'Har Ghar Jal' State in India

According to reports in news outlets Hindustan Times and LiveMint quoting a government press release, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones of the ‘Har Ghar Jal Yojana’ (Tap Water in Every Household Scheme) in the Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts of Uttar Pradesh via video conferencing, while UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was physically present in Sonbhadra. PM Modi also interacted with the village water and sanitation committee members during the event.

The projects are expected to provide a tap water connection to every rural household in the 2,995 villages of the districts, benefiting about over 4 million people who live there. The total estimated cost of the projects is US$755.5 million, and they are projected to be completed within 2 years under the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ announced last year on India’s 72nd Independence Day.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is being implemented in partnership with various states in India to enable every rural household to have a functional household tap connection by 2024. This Mission aims at ensuring potable water supply in adequate quantity and of prescribed quality to every rural household on a regular and long-term basis.

The rural drinking water supply is a complex subject with various social, environmental and technical challenges. Given the challenges and the knowledge gaps faced while implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission with speed and scale, along with the future of rural water security, there is a pressing need for significant research and innovation in the water supply sector. Thus the Mission will be supporting, promoting and cultivating research and innovation, and is inviting proposals from young innovators and startups working in this sector to provide cost-effective solutions and fill knowledge gaps.

In the year since Jal Jeevan Mission was announced, 20 million households have been provided tap water connection. In October, Goa earned itself the distinction of becoming the first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ State in the country as it successfully provided 100 per cent Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) in rural areas, covering 230,000 households.
