The G20 Extraordinary Virtual Education Ministers’ Meeting convened on June 27 with the member states participating in discussions related to the impact of COVID-19 on the education sector. The event also saw participants discuss measures to ensure the continuation of educational endeavors against the background of the pandemic. Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank represented India and highlighted the endeavors of the Central Government in utilizing the digital platform in enabling students across the nation to resume education.
Under the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ campaign, the Government has focused on digital learning initiatives. Platforms like SWAYAM, DIKSHA, e-PG Pathshala, National Digital Library, and Virtual Labs would continue to serve as repositories for quality educational material. Massive open online courses on the SWAYAM platform will be compiled to include material in English and regional languages such that the course material is accessible to all.
The digital divide would be bridged through the SWAYAM PRABHA initiative where 34 DTH channels and community radio are to be utilized to provide educational content 24*7 to children from rural areas. Furthermore, quality teaching material would be made available to differently-abled students through the Digitally Accessible Information System (DAISY) platform. Students, teachers, and parents can also avail counseling services through the Manodarpan initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The Government of India continues endeavours to implement widespread policies for students from all walks of life. The use of the YUKTI 2.0 portal enables the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to promote wellness among the student community and provide support with regard to placement opportunities. Previous endeavors of the Government to promote education have manifested through the National Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Mission and the Bharat Padhe campaign among others wherein quality education has been democratized.
