Larsen & Toubro Ltd, an Indian engineering and construction firm, has received a contract for water and sanitation works in Sri Lanka valued at as much as US$360 million. The company said on June 19 that the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract came from Sri Lanka’s National Water Supply and Drainage Board for the Kundasale Haragama water supply project in Kandy district. Backed by the Export–Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) and the Bank of Ceylon, the project will provide drinking water to around 330,000 people. This project is in line with the Government of India’s ongoing initiatives to aid infrastructure development, especially in developing nations.

L&T said that the project will involve design, construction, commissioning, operations and maintenance of an intake structure, a 55 million litres/day water treatment plant, 73 km of transmission mains, 19 service reservoirs with a total capacity of 16.2 million litres, nine pump houses, 280 km of distribution mains and associated electrical, mechanical and instrumentation works. The project also includes works around automation, including measurement of input and output of water through suitable SCADA and other instrumentation works. The company said that the contract was in sync with its strategy to expand into select SAARC countries and other international markets.

In May 2019, Ircon International Ltd, an Indian Government-run transport infrastructure firm, has won an international railway contract worth around US$91.3 million from Sri Lanka Railways. The deal involved upgradation of Sri Lanka’s Northern Railway line from Maho to Omanthai, spanning around 128 km, with associated infrastructure works. This project is being financed by the Export–Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) as per Indian credit lines. India has so far committed around US$25 billion in soft loans for rail and other infrastructure projects to over 60 countries in the past 14 years. Exim Bank’s assistance has mainly focussed on countries of Africa, Southeast Asia and West Asia.
