An India CEO Forum on Climate Change held by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) on May 8 brought together business leaders to help achieve India’s national and international climate change commitments. Businesses, especially in a fast-growing major economy, are key partners on the journey to reaching global climate change goals. Herein, the forum focused on driving transition to a low-carbon economy.
Discussions at the forum covered topics from the 2019 UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit, to be held in September 2019 in New York, in which India and Sweden will be leading the discussions on Industry Transition. The sessions voiced deliberations from the Government on India’s international commitments to fighting climate change as well as deliberations from businesses on private sector actions around climate change and future visions for a low-carbon trajectory. More than 50 leaders from the private and public sector, apart from Government ministries, spoke at the forum to share ways in which they are supporting India to meet its climate change objectives. The forum allowed the Government and businesses to develop a common voice on climate change issues for global events so that there is no disconnect between the stand of the Government and industries.
In March 2019, India had successfully piloted resolutions on two leading environmental issues relating to single-use plastics and sustainable nitrogen management at the 4th session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). The UNEA, held in Nairobi, hailed innovative solutions for environmental challenges as well as sustainable production and consumption. The Indian Government has taken proactive measures to employ leading environmental standards in the operations of key state machineries, while increasingly moving towards renewable energy sources. India has also emerged as a global renewable leader with the world’s fifth largest clean energy capacity.
