With hundreds of millions of people joining the global middle-class, the demand for air travel is seeing an unforeseen upsurge. The International Civil Aviation Organization has predicted a doubling of global air travel by 2030, creating a need for extensive efforts to bring the entire aviation ecosystem to pace. To ride this strong tailwind of growth and pave the way forward for the sector, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is organizing a Global Aviation Summit with an overarching theme of “Flying for all” on January 15-16 in Mumbai.

Besides rapid capacity expansion in the nation’s biggest airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai, airports at various state capitals as well growing business and culture centres are seeing increasing investment in infrastructure building. This is in addition to the Airport Authority of India’s focus on reviving 50 airports to boost domestic connectivity. The Government has also proposed to develop 200 low-cost airports by 2035 involving an investment exceeding US$2 billion. The idea is to expand airport capacity to handle over a billion passengers per year as carriers add aircraft to their fleet.

Indian carriers currently have in place orders for nearly 1,000 aircraft worth more than US$50 billion for delivery over the next ten years, almost double the number of aircraft currently in service today. After the US and China, India has placed the maximum orders for aircraft. Indication to this effect were available from the “Wings India 2018” held at Hyderabad in March 2018 and was attended by the who’s who of the aviation industry. India is projected to be the third largest aviation market by 2022, even going on to become the biggest ever in the next ten years. Estimates suggest investments topping US$15 billion by 2030.
