5G rollout to create 45k jobs over next two quarters

After the rolling out of 5G, Indian telecom service providers are expected to create a demand for up to 45,000 jobs over the next two quarters, according to media reports. Almost 80,000 jobs related to 5G have already been announced across the country in anticipation of the network’s rollout. 

Experts said that a 15-20% quarter-on-quarter increase in overall hiring related to 5G  has been witnessed across industries as the increase in demand for 5G-related tech talent is also coming from industries like healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and automobile. 

Roles in demand

According to the reports, job roles in demand are networking engineers, artificial intelligence & machine learning experts, user experience designers, cloud computing experts, cyber security specialists, and data science & data analytics experts. Job posts related to 5G roles increased by 68-70% in the first half of 2022. 

Telecom departments have the major hiring demand. On the other hand, non-telecom companies will be looking to hire professionals for areas such as infrastructure development, equipment, network operations, and spectrum services for positions like network administration, testing, and software development. 

The reports mentioned that over 40% of the companies have expressed their intent to increase their workforce to work with 5G-implemented technologies. Companies are also hiring more freshers to fill in this requirement across different verticals.

Use Cases

Experts say that 5G is going to witness a wider range of use cases in smart cities for the internet of things, and Industry 4.0. Globally, almost 44% of 5G applications will be found in these two sectors. India is also expected to witness an increase in the usage of modern technologies, such as sensor-based crop monitoring, remote equipment control, surveillance, energy management, and smart transportation, as 5G is poised to improve coverage and technologies.

Upskilling

As per the reports, experts said that the implementation of 5G will permit industrial systems with technologies such as AR/VR, IoT, and cloud computing among other things. They stressed the need for job applicants to upskill themselves to be able to work on these.
